Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) heavy diesel hydraulic locomotive, road number V 200 002. V 200.0 (preproduction series) general-purpose locomotive in a crimson paint scheme as the locomotive looked in the Mid-Fifties. Use: Medium and heavy passenger and freight trains.
The new German Federal Railroad was intensively involved in the Fifties with replacing costly steam operation with other types of motive power. In the meantime, the high cost of comprehensive electrification would have broken the budgets of that time. Attention was thus also paid to powerful diesel-powered units for important express train service. The required technology was already available for smaller and medium weight diesel locomotives. In the meantime, the decision was taken for low maintenance and quiet running articulated drive shaft technology for powerful motorized units. In this connection Daimler-Benz, MAN, and Maybach in cooperation with the German Federal Railroad Central Office in Munich had come up with a new 12-cylinder power plant with 1,100 horsepower performance. In addition, Maybach and Voith developed a new fluid drive. The successful V 200.0 locomotive was developed from these progressive components at Krauss-Maffei under the participation of most of the West German locomotive builders. The two power plants of the V 200.0 put out 2,200 horsepower together with a service weight of about 78 metric tons. A comparatively powerful steam locomotive with a tender would have tipped the scales at about 160 metric tons. The proof of the extraordinarily high reliability and practicality of these locomotive icons was that half a century after their purchase there are still several units currently in service abroad and on privately owned railroads.
The class V 200.0 diesel locomotive is being produced in 2024 in a one-time series only for Insider members.

The Myth of the V 200 and the Legendary F Express Trains
It was the unsurpassed rail star of the Economic Miracle years: the legendary German Federal Railroad V 200. The five preproduction units rolled out on German rails starting in 1953 and immediately attracted a great deal of attention. Its brawny but simultaneously elegant design with letters in relief on the side walls stood for the breakthrough of a new age in railroading: away from the sooty steam giant and on to the modern super power diesel locomotive. These red growlers soon conquered the rails all over the German Federal Republic pulling elegant, first class long-distance express trains. A myth was born. Moreover, also in the Märklin program, for the V 200 was as successful in the small scale as on the real life railroad. The new Insider F express train "Senator" with the finely detailed preproduction V 200 002 locomotive is linked to this tradition and reminds people of a time when the railroad in the new German Federal Republic stood paired as a symbol for punctuality with style and comfort.
