Flygplan Philippine Air Lines Douglas DC-6B - PI-C295 "Magellans Cross / Cruz de Magallanes"
Philippine Airlines purchased its first two DC-6s in 1948 and used them on the route from Manila to San Francisco. Because only three refueling stops were necessary instead of the four required by the DC-4, it was able to shorten the flight time from 41 to 30 hours. In 1952, Philippine Airlines received this DC-6B with the slightly stretched fuselage, christened "Magellan"s Cross / Cruz de Magellanes", to increase its long-range capacities. This wooden cross, which still exists today, is said to have been set by Spanish explorers led by Ferdinand Magellan, after arrival in Cebu in the Philippines in 1521.
