Description

VW Beetle 1303S - moss met.

Beetle 1303 S as a special edition with corduroy seats

A fine narrow stripe on its side flanks was the only characteristic that set the 1973 special edition VW Beetle 1303 S apart from its model siblings. Still rolling off the production line at the Emden plant back then, the former endurance runner was sold as a special model 1303 Big". Beetle fans are very much aware of the special nature of this model, as its seat cushions were made from corduroy fabric. The 1303 S boasts a 1.6 litre engine in the rear with an output of respectable and roaring 50 hp - all for a list price of DM 7,670 in the introduction year of the VW Golf. One of the features that is particularly striking in this WIKING model is the decorative stripe above the steps with lettering "1303 Big” lettering. Its real-life sibling 50 years ago only came in three colours. The 1303 S was regarded as a the most progressive of the Beetle family when it was introduced in 1972, as it boasted such signature features as a bulging windscreen and the large three-chamber tail lights that had doubled in size. The shiny “elephant feet”, as the reversing lights were called by Beetle enthusiasts and deriders alike, marked the appearance of the rear with conspicuous dominance. The WIKING prototype was only built in 1973."
