The Hansa was a medieval association of German cities which engaged in long distance business mainly in the area of the Baltic Sea. The Hansa probably originates from the fellowship of Gotlands merchants in the 12th century. Later, the main centre of the Hansa was in the city of Luebeck. Other important hanseatic cities included Hamburg, Koln, Rostock, Danzig, Stralsund, Elblag, Riga and many others. The golden age of the Hansa was the 14th century and the most widely used type of ship at that time was the Cog. A lot of contemporary illustrations of Cogs from the 14th century have survived and many wrecks have also been found. This model represents one of largest cogs from the first half of the 14th century.
