A Type Pwg with Marker Signs

Pwg or written out as "Baggage Car for Freight Trains" was once a car type in the thousands on German rails. For decades there were not only conductors doing duty on passenger trains, but also on freight trains. The type Pwg was usually located between the locomotive and the train so that the conductor did not have to struggle through the ballast to reach the locomotive crew in freight yards. The Prussians built the most Pwg designs with the type Pwg pr14, which reached a total of 9,752 units between 1913 and 1925. A feature of most of the type Pwg cars was the observation cupola giving the conductor a view of the train. When bulk freight service was introduced in the Twenties on the rails with modern dump cars, the German State Railroad did not do without the type Pwg cars although coal in particular was shipped directly to power plants in unit trains. However, the freight train baggage cars were coupled to the end of these heavy trains for safety reasons, because the heavy dump cars constructed of steel would probably have crushed the lightweight type Pwg cars in accidents. Tempi passati or distant memories. Presently, all freight trains run without type Pwg cars. On a model railroad this important chapter in railroad history continues to live on in a variety of train compositions.
