The FRAM Polar Research Ship is a unique ship designed specifically for Arctic exploration by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen in the late 19th century. Nansen started the design of the ship in 1893, and the ship was completed and launched in 1896. One of the most important features that makes the ship special is its ability to glide over sea ice. In this way, the ship had the ability to move between glaciers without getting stuck.

FRAM means “to move forward” in Norwegian, and the ship's name symbolizes its ability to move forward despite the harsh conditions in the polar regions. The ship was used extensively by Nansen's famous Arctic expeditions, as well as by other explorers and scientists. Nansen's Arctic expedition between 1893 and 1896 went down in history as a journey that carried the ship towards the North Pole and carried out scientific research in the polar region.

The same ship was used in Roald Amundsen's unforgettable journey to the South Pole, as well as in Nansen's Arctic explorations. Amundsen achieved a historical success by reaching the South Pole with the ship FRAM between 1910 and 1912.

The FRAM ship has become an indispensable part of polar exploration with its resistance to the harsh climatic conditions in the polar regions, its special design and its use in scientific research. The ship continued to be used for many different research purposes throughout the 20th century and contributed to obtaining important data on subjects such as natural life in the polar regions, ice sheets and climate change.

Today, the FRAM Polar Research Ship is open to visitors as a museum in Norway. This ship is an important window into the exciting and challenging world of polar exploration.
