OcCre proudly presents the San Felipe model, a majestic
representation of the iconic 18th-century warship. Crafted with
precision at a 1/86 scale, this model measures 830mm in length, 320mm
in width, and 630mm in height, demanding a high level of skill and
dedication for its construction.
Its name continues to give rise to many confusions. Some authors refer
to it as “San Felipe,” others as “El Real,” or “Real Felipe.” The vessel is
named after Felipe V of Spain, the first Bourbon king of Spain.
The San Felipe was a Spanish three-deck first-rate warship (the
highest rank) and one of the most famous and emblematic vessels of its
time.
Built in 1716 at the Catalan shipyard of Sant Feliu de Guixols
following the proportions of Antonio Gaztañeta, armed with 108
cannons, and commenced its service in the Navy in 1717.
It was built without sparing any materials, featuring double planking,
both internal and external, providing its hull with great strength. The
hull covering was made of oak wood. The planks, known as
“Hiladas or trancas,” were 8 meters long and 25 centimeters thick. Other
ship components were crafted from oak, elm, and pine.
The construction likely required over 4,000 trees, explaining why
historians consider shipbuilding as one of the causes of Spanish
deforestation.
