VW T1 (Type 2) Box van "Liebherr"

Keeping construction vehicles of the Economic Miracle age rolling

Construction vehicles operating on the construction sites of the post-war decades did not stand a chance without fast customer service. Early on, Liebherr relied on the VW T1 (Type 2) to drop off technicians on site who were fully equipped with tools and spare parts. This was the time when the VW “Bulli” earned the appreciation it is still enjoying today. As a matter of fact, VW in Wolfsburg had the first prototype of the original ready for operation as early as 1949 – as a transporter version, it was intended to be the natural next step in the development of the Beetle “Type 1”. After only 51 weeks of development, the new transporter was presented to the press on November 12, 1949 and entered into series production at the Wolfsburg plant on March 8, 1950. WIKING deliberately speaks the design language of legendary master model maker Alfred Kedzierski – courtesy of historical original patterns and documents retrieved from the WIKING archive. The contemporary Liebherr look fits in seamlessly with this period.
